Chapter 11 - Book of the Dead



Summary: (Sarah S)

This chapter is basicly about Odysseuss and his men's visit to the underworld. Odysseuss recieves his prophacy from Teiresias and learns that he will one day return home though it wont be an easy journey. After he questions his mother he questions all the people who gave birth the gods and high ranking people. Then he is asked to stay and tell more of his story but he rufuses. After that he sees more legendary heros adn gives them news of there families. When he's almost done the tribes of the underworld aproach him and he ets scared and runs to the ship and tells his men to take off quickly. external image logo ( this is a pic of Hades lord of the underworld,(that sounds creepy))

Major Themes: (Lea)

Homeric Hero- (pg 140) The goddess, Circe, helped out Odysseus and his crew by bringing winds which helped move the ship. The ship moved all day.

Loyalty-(pg 140 and 141) Odysseus honors the dead by praying to the gods and mixing honey, milk, water, and wine. He also made animal sacrifices.

Development of Telemachus-(pg 144) Odysseus' mother, Anticleia, explained how Telemachus is kind of taking over the palace by attending banquets and was in peaceful possession of the lands.

Disguise-(pg 145) Odysseus tried to hug his mother but she is just a ghost and he can't hold onto her. She explains to him that she doesn't have any bones to hold anything. Odysseus is depressed about how he made his mother die from grief.

Loyalty-(pg 145) Odysseus' mother is loyal to him because she dies because she hadn't heard anything about him.

Homeric Hero-(throughout the whole chapter) As Odysseus sees all the dead, he explains who they are and what they have done explaining how they are heroes in different ways.

Loyalty-(pg 148) Odysseus tells how Iphimedia slept with Poseidon and was not loyal.

Homeric Hero and Justice-(pg 148) After he is done telling the story, he said that he believes that the gods will help him and that it is in their hands. He trusts that they will help him with their powers and bring justice because he deserves to go back home with his family.

Hospitality-(pg 148 and 149) Arete says that Odysseus can stay with them in the palace as a sign of generosity. She tells the Phaeacians how he is in need of their help. They obey. They all feel bad for him and his misfortunes and decide to help him out.

Loyalty-(pg 149 and 150) Odysseus stays with Agamemnon as he is dieing and describing how he was tortured by Aegisthus. This shows that Odysseus is very caring.

Loyalty-(pg 150) This page explains how sometimes it is so hard to trust anyone even your own wife because Agamemnons' wife was plotting to kill him. It explains how you should keep most of your plans to yourself.

Homeric Hero-(pg 152) Achilles is dead but Odysseus is explaining how he has great power among the dead.

Justice-(pg 154 and 155) Tityus had vultures eating at his liver because he assaulted the consort of Zeus. This shows that most things are fair.

Homeric Simile-(pg 155) Odysseus explains Heracles and how he looked like black night with his bow and arrow.





Locations Traveled: (Bella)

Circe gives them wind to leave and go to the Halls of Hades.
Hades- follow Circe's directions(dig hole, sacrifice lamb, etc.) and the spirits come up. Odysseus questions Teiresias. Teirasias gives him his prophesy.
He also gets to talk to other spirits like Tyro who fell in love with the River Enipeus. This is wehere she makes abies with Poseidon.
Another spirit was Chloris who's father who would give her hand to no one but the man who succeeded in driving away the cattle of the mighty Iphiclus from Phylace. Melampus was the only one who took up the adventure and was punished by the gods.
Back to reality at the Palace of Alcinous, the Phaecians want to give him even more gifts.

Not to touch the flocks of the sun when he reaches Thrinacia. Otherwise, he won't return home without suffering more and losing all his crew.

Make another trip to a distant land to soothe Poseidon.

Odysseus will die of old age, peacefully and surrounded by loved ones.

She died of sadness while waiting for him to return.


What advice does Agamemnon give Odysseus? (Sukie)
He tells him never to be too trustful even of your own wife and not to show your wife all that is in your mind.



What must Tantalus endure? Why? (Sukie)
Tantalus is extremely thirsty and hungry. He has a pool of water below him but whenever he tries to drink from it, it disappears. He has trees dangling fruits in front of him but whenever he tried to grab some, they disappear into the sky. He is suffering because he stole food from the gods to give to the mortals and he served the gods the flesh of his son at a banquet.



How does Sisyphus suffer? Why? (Sukie)

Sisyphus tries to push a huge rock over a hill but every time it reaches the top, it rolls back down. This is happening to him because he tricked the god of death twice. Once by blinding him and once by convincing him to let him go back to earth.
